This image shows a small child that has acquired measles. His parents choose not to vaccinate him because they believed that the disease no longer existed and the vaccine potentially caused autism. I will state that The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics all concluded that scientific evidence proved that the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine does not cause Autism. This is a common misconception that many parents have regarding many of the vaccines out there. However, it is because so many parents are choosing to not vaccinate that these diseases such as measles, mumps and pertussis have become much more common.
In the image, this poor little boy is covered in these large, painful spots. Not only does he have many complications of the disease (i.e. fever, dry cough, rash); he also has to deal with the physical outcomes. This child will likely take some time to recover from such a severe rash, as well as likely have scarring. This would not be so upsetting if the scarring was anywhere else on his body, but his is on his face. He will have to live with it for the rest of his life. It's sad to think of this poor child dealing with all these terrible issues simply because his parents choose not to vaccinate him.
You also consider who this child could of infected as well. Measles is said to be contagious up to 4 days before the first signs of the disease appear; which means this child was probably at school, day care and playgrounds infecting all sorts of children. Now lets assume that all the other parents of children this little boy came in contact with chose to vaccinate their children as soon as possible; what about those children that could not yet have the opportunity. A small infant, for example, may acquired the virus from this child and could now become deathly ill simply because it went to the same day care as this boy. Parents that choose to not vaccinate their children have that right; however, they also need to realize that their child should then not be allowed to play openly with other children because they could infect others. By choosing not to vaccinate, you are not just making that choice for your child, but for every child yours comes in contact with.
This is a very interesting topic because I have this conversation with my dad all the time. In this situation you are talking about it is upsetting because the parents did not vaccinate their child because of miss information, but there are many parents that choose not to vaccinate because they have done the research and found all the side effects that could come with it. There are many reasons that people choose not to get vaccinations. One idea as you research would be look up different side effects and reasons that people do not want to get their children vaccinated. You may be surprised at some of the answers you find. It is unfortunate that this child could spread the disease. On the other hand how many things are out there that you can get from other people such as strep throat and people do not care and will go out in public.
ReplyDeleteKaty,
ReplyDeleteThis picture is heart-stopping. How devastating for that poor little boy! My pediatrician told me all of the pros and cons of vaccinating my daughter. Still to this day if she is up for a shot, he tells me everything I need to know about it. He also mentioned to me that these diseases that everyone thought was "extinct" are coming back because parents are breaking down the barriers that originally protected the children and families. It is every families choice whether or not they choose to immunize their children, but I think a lot of the decisions are made out of what they hear and not their own research.
As a parent you have to make the best possible choices for your child(ren) and in doing so most of the time that means doing your own research. Your picture does a great job getting your point across.
This image is definitely a very sad picture but also perfect proof of why you should allow the vaccinations for your children. I think a lot of the time people think to themselves this would never happen to them or their children, but when it does they definitely rethink their decisions and at that point it is to late. This poor little boy now has to go through this horrible disease and have this horrible memory for the rest of his life. The parents are not the ones that have to feel how this feels but they do have to experience seeing their poor baby go through this. The statement you made about the side effects that come with these vaccines is definitely alarming and do bring up many concerns but I have never really heard of anyone actually going through any of the side affects they mention. I would like to see if you can research actual stories of children getting these side effects or not? Maybe a statistic of children getting the actual disease without vaccines vs. children getting the vaccines and actually getting the side effects. That would definitely be interesting to learn about. Great Post!
ReplyDeleteKaty,
ReplyDeleteThe image you found for your research topic, is great in the sense that it really strikes people and grabs their attention or at least it did for me. I am a parent and do believe in the vaccination process. However, I would like to know more about what's in them and the real complications they cause, like you said there are a lot of misconceptions out there and to not get your child vaccinated is not something that is really an option for most people who do not want their children looking like the poor boy above. What I am interested in learning more about are the Flu vaccinations, how does it work if it is giving your body the virus. I think you are on your way to a great paper and picked a prime research topic that I would love to read more about. Great Post!

Katy,
ReplyDeleteThat picture not only breaks my heart but it makes me sick to my stomach. I think you make an awesome point when you state that child could have come in contact with an infant who isn’t old enough to get the vaccine. I also like how you put in there that the shots don’t cause Autism but I wouldn’t go too far in depth with that unless you are REALLY going to focus on that just because it is such a huge debate still.
I think some interesting facts would be if you could find out the percentage of children who don’t have the correct vaccines at a random elementary, middle and high school. I don’t know if any school will release that but it sure would be something worth checking into that could make a great point in your paper.
I feel like if you were to do some research on how many children die from not getting the vaccines in America that would be great information as well. I don’t know if I would talk about other countries just because they may not have all of them available to them.
I think you will have a great paper and I can’t wait to read more into it.
